Vilamoura Junior Trophy 2013

On 24th and 25th August, the last weekend of the month, the juniors played in the Vilamoura Junior Championship at the Oceânico Pinhal course. The tournament marks the end of the Summer Golf School and Miguel Ribeiro, was the boys'champion whilst his fellow member, Sara Gouveia, was the girls'champion.  A record number of contestants took part this year, with participants competing in under-10, -12, -14, -16 and -18 divisions over 18 holes, whereas beginners played a 9-hole competition.

Another 20 youngsters played in a putting competition as part of their initial golf instruction given by the Vilamoura Club pros who also assisted with the organisation of the whole event.

As in previous years, prizes were handed out to the winners after completion of this Vilamoura event. Also, juniors from other Portuguese clubs, such as Paço do Lumiar, Oporto, Quinta do Perú, Carvoeiro and Miramar were invited to take part. All the players were given various items of golf equipment – caps and balls, etc.

Francisco Oliveira was the under-18 winner with a score of 145 strokes

Vitor Lopes was the under-18 runner-up

Francisco Baião came in 3rd place


Greig Mann won the under-16 division

Daniel Caixeiro was second with a score of 176


João Maria Pontes (Oporto GC) scored 169 to win the under-14 division

Marta Raposo, from Carvoeiro GC was the under-14 runner-up with a score of 187

Vilamoura junior, David Bandarra, came in 3rd with 200 strokes


The under-12 winner was Calvin Holmes

Gonçalo Teodoro was runner-up in the under-12s with 179 strokes

António Sobral was third in the under-12 division


The winner of the under-10 division was Francisco Matos Coelho after carding 168

Diogo Mealha (173 strokes) was the under-10 division runner-up

Nikolay Kallinin scored 178 and was 3rd in the under-10 division


Junior player Francisco Matos Coelho scored a hole-in-one at the 8th on the Oceânico Pinhal course


The following are the results of competítions played on Mondays in July and August at the Oceânico and Millennium courses:


Diogo Pinto scored 58 points to come in 3rd in the 9-hole competition

Leonor Duarte was the runner-up in the 9-hole competition with a tally of 90 points 


The 9-hole competition winner was Bernardo Martins after scoring 106 points 

The players posed for a group picture at the end


André Sancho (225 points) was placed 3rd in the 18-hole competition

The runner-up was Ricardo Freire Costa who scored 255 points

Miguel Ribeiro defended his 2012 title after amassing 274 points
